Do You Have Uneven or Chipped Teeth?

Veneers can be the perfect solution to encase the surface of your front teeth. You can gain a better smile by improving your teeth colour, reshaping the appearance and hiding those imperfections.

Veneers are thin porcelain or composite resin facings that are bonded to the front of teeth, making them a strong and durable treatment for smile makeovers.

What is involved in placing Veneers?

Porcelain veneers can straighten, lengthen, whiten and close gaps between teeth to optimise a desired smile and bite. A veneer is basically a conservative version of a porcelain crown as it covers all the visible surface of a tooth.

Teeth must be reshaped to some degree to ensure the porcelain veneers are not bulky and over-contoured. In other words, some outer enamel may need to be removed to allow space for the shell. Reshaping teeth allows for many adjustments which is why your teeth can be straightened to perfection. We use a special light to activate an adhesive which permanently bonds the porcelain veneer to the underlying tooth. Porcelain veneers are very strong, never discolour and are stain resistant. Teeth whitening may be necessary to match the colour of existing teeth which do not receive a veneer.

Am I a suitable candidate for Veneers?

Veneers can be applied to one or more teeth in order to match existing visible teeth. Alternatively a patient can completely change the overall colour of their teeth by placing a veneer on each individual tooth. When compared to other cosmetic work they often require less of the natural tooth to be removed.

This treatment is suitable for a large portion of patients who have:

  • Slightly stained teeth
  • Cosmetic imperfections in tooth structure
  • Good oral health
  • Sufficient tooth enamel
  • Moderately straight teeth
  • You do not grind or clench your teeth

Types of Veneers

Composite Veneers

The primary advantage of composite veneers is cost. Porcelain veneers are much more expensive than composites which is a very important financial consideration for many patients. Direct composite veneers are sculpted on your teeth rather than offsite in a laboratory. The tooth-shaded resin is applied directly to the tooth, where your dentist will shape and harden the resin with a high intensity light to create the desired aesthetic look. Once finished, the resin is polished in order to elicit a more natural tooth-like appearance. This procedure is much less invasive and noticeably quicker to administer than porcelain.

Porcelain Veneers

Although the cost of porcelain veneers is much more significant, the durability and strength of the material gives a much longer lifespan. This is an important trade off to consider when compared to the lower cost of composite veneers, since porcelain will outlive any composite resin Veneer treatment. Furthermore, the aesthetics of a porcelain veneer has a translucent quality that is very similar to the enamel of a natural tooth. The material is highly resistant to staining and chipping compared to composite resin which is more porous and susceptible.
